Electric vehicles are smooth and quiet to drive, plus they are powerful and very economical. They are a lot like driving any other car – but there are some key differences and benefits.
There are a few different types of electric vehicles available:
- Full electric (EV)
- Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which use both a petrol and an electric engine powered by a plug-in battery
- Full hybrid (Hybrid) vehicles which use both a petrol and electric engine with the petrol engine charging the battery.
At Brendan Foot Supersite we make buying your next vehicle easy. Our experienced team has in-depth knowledge about all vehicles, including electric and hybrid vehicles. Some great points to note about electric and hybrid vehicles include:
- Driving a vehicle fully or partially powered by an electric motor is a great step towards lower or no CO2 emissions
- Maintenance costs can be very low
- The running cost will make you smile – from as little as 40 cents per litre

Charging Electric Vehicles
The range – or distance travelled on a full charge – is always a hot topic when it comes to full electric vehicles, and the good news is that ‘range anxiety’ is being addressed all the time. Most daily vehicle travel in New Zealand is over small distances so running out of range is very unlikely. The infrastructure to support EV use in New Zealand is also growing all the time, with over 500 charging stations across the country and more opening all the time.
Alongside that, the range offered with new electric vehicles is also increasing, and the charge time decreasing meaning you can go further and stop for shorter periods. Having said that, with any long-distance travel you will always factor in stopping for food, fuel and bathroom breaks, so stopping to charge your EV is just like that, but with major cost savings on the fuel.
Hybrids are self-charging with the option of a petrol engine as a backup, and PHEVs can similarly run on either engine or battery, with the option to plug in and charge when you can.
