GET LOST

Hyundai New Zealand has recently announced that they are going to be bringing a range of new hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains to the market in early 2022. In response to the Clean Car Programme, this is a move that will ensure Kiwis who are keen on the premium Hyundai option can also help with the initiative for a cleaner future.

The following new models will be available for pre-order very soon:

Hyundai Kona Hybrid

The standard Hyundai Kona 1.6L petrol has proven to be very popular in New Zealand. Its striking looks and well-appointed interior make for a very comfortable day-to-day vehicle. Kona’s small SUV proportions give it some practicality without it feeling too big or bulky. It is already available with a fully electric motor as an option, but until now was missing the step in the middle – a hybrid. If you’re thinking of electric but worried about whether it would work for your lifestyle, then the hybrid option is a good halfway-house that gives some fuel savings without the range anxiety. So far we know that Kona Hybrid will come in 2WD and will add a 32kW motor to the current line-up. You still get all the great colour options of the existing Kona, but with some specially designed alloys that set you apart as a hybrid driver. We’re expecting to see fuel economy figures close to 3.9L/100km overall, which is impressive for a standard hybrid system.

Hyundai Tucson Hybrid & Plug-in Hybrid

The all-new Tucson has turned heads with its bold new look and refreshing design features. In terms of size, the Tucson fits well with most people’s needs. Classified as a medium-sized SUV it seats 5 with comfort and has plenty of room in the boot to cope with weekends and trips away. Tucson will soon add both a hybrid and plug-in hybrid to its lineup across both Entry and Elite specifications. There will be more flexibility in the drivetrain with a choice of 2WD or 4WD drive on the hybrid and AWD only for the plug-in. Importantly the plug-in model will be able to travel up 56km on pure battery power, which is a huge plus for those who do regular short hop driving. It means you can get your fuel economy down to an expected 1.4L/100km.

Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid

One of the most popular large SUVs in the country, the Santa Fe is a trusted badge by thousands. The recent launch of the all-new version proved yet again how fond New Zealanders are of the Santa Fe. Its size, interior spec and engine options are a perfect mix that fit many people’s lifestyles. The addition of both a hybrid and plug-in hybrid now means it goes up against the Mitsubishi Outlander to fight for the top spot as the best 7-seater PHEV SUV. All Santa Fe hybrid and PHEV models will be all-wheel-drive and will feature two different electric motor attachments depending on whether it’s a standard hybrid (44.2kW) or plug-in (66.9kW). Just like Tucson, it will be able to travel 56km on electric alone, and the PHEV should offer as little as 1.6 L/100km fuel economy. There will be some new alloys for these models as well as a different grille to denote the difference in the engine underneath.
